Clifton Guthrie was born and raised in the village of Metlakatla, Alaska. After high school he moved to Seattle, Washington where he joined and worked in the Carpenters' Union for ten years. Clifton and his wife, also from Metlakatla, had started their own family with the addition of 2 boys. It was then that they realized they wanted their sons to have the same experiences with the culture, subsistence, and family lifestyle that Clifton and his wife had experienced themselves. Clifton is of the Laxskiik clan (Eagle Crest).
