Tlingit/Unangaxˆ Artist Nicholas Galanin

Nicholas Galanin is a Tlingit and Unangaxˆ working artist, instructor, and professor from Sitka. Galanin comes from a long line of Northwest Coast artists, starting with his great-grandfather, who sculpted in wood, down through his father, who works in both precious metal and stone. 

Galanin completed his BA focusing on jewelry design and silver-smithing at the London Guildhall University and went on to Massey University in New Zealand, where he earned a master’s degree in Indigenous Visual Art. He currently teaches Northwest Coast Arts at University of Alaska Southeast in Sitka and pursues customary as well as contemporary approaches to art, in parallel paths.
